Amusing take on modern childhood - with ghosts

'Bard Boy' is told through the mind and words of a thirteen-year-old schoolboy, wrapped up in himself and his place in present-day London. He's a bit of an anti-hero, adopting a spiky exterior to conceal a sensitive interior. He's taken by surprise when the supernatural introduces him to the world of Tudor England. The tale moves on quickly to a surprisingly emotional resolution, through short chapters of witty dialogue, sharp character-drawing and colourful observation. Some of the present-day people in the book are given the names of contemporaries of Shakespeare and characters from his plays. The adult in me was encouraged to find out a little more about them, and the Bard's 'lost play'. And I really must go back to Stratford (upon Avon)

A very good debut novel for YA

Never underestimate a book aimed at Young Adults, my favourite author growing up was Diana Wynne Jones and I still regularly revisit her books. This story was a delight to read, it made me laugh often and taught me a few Malaysian words, ‘Jambun’ being a definite standout word to know. Ben is sometimes annoyingly silly but then aren’t all teenagers. It tackles blended families, cultures, ghosts and olde England. For a debut novel, I enjoyed it immensely, can’t wait for the authors next book

As an avid reader with an eclectic taste,I was pleasantlly surprised how much I enjoyed this book. As a modern day ghost story it hit all the right spots. It was fast paced, and the humour mixed in with the moments of pathos was done extremely well. I thoroughly recommend this title if your are looking for easy escapist reading with a few chills

An enjoyable and clever read. Although there is 400 years between Ben and Hamnet they have the same goal. I enjoyed several laugh out loud moments and found the characters interesting.

When I bought the book I didn't realise that Louise Kulup must be one of the funniest writers out there. Laugh out loud, and a really good story. Full of quirks and such a relief to read a book that isn't a fakey book written by someone on TV. This is the real stuff. A hero I could relate to.

Fun and colourful book, my children want it read time and time again and they are reading along and memorising the rhyming verse now and know what is coming next. A great way to bring some science into their little minds and makes a change as quite a different memorable theme which is refreshing and stands out on our book shelf, we will collect them all!

I bought a few copies because the story is so well told. It is suitable for adults as well as it is a reminder of school days. The characters are all believable but with a slight twist at the end.

I read this out of curiosity before giving it to my daughter and am so pleased that I did. The novel has much to say about the familiar circumstances and relationships which any (young) adult has had to negotiate. In addition, as the blurb makes stark, there are several situations which are less identifiable but skilfully navigated by a flawed protagonist who is looking for answers. In addition to a riveting and well-paced plot, ultimately what struck and has stayed with me is the quiet way the novel addresses the pain of grief. Without resorting to the mawkish or saccharine, the reality of friendship, family and their associated fragility is brought to life with subtlety and without condescension. Highly recommended.

I bought this for my 10 year old daughter and she absolutely loved it! She’s never been much of a reader at all, but this book captured her imagination fully. I decided to read it myself as she told me that she really enjoyed it. It’s a truly heartwarming story! Couldn’t recommend enough
